Rudd Gas Furnace

QUESTION:

As it is now warming up, I've found a problem in the ac system at my newly purchased home. It appears that basically any time the blower is on, the gas furnace is running. The heat setting works fine. If I turn on the AC, the compressor kicks on, but then like 30 seconds later, the gas furnace also turns on. If the heat/cool setting is turned to off, and I turn the fan to ON (instead of auto), the heat also kicks on. I came home yesterday and it was literally 100F upstairs!!! Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem? We've got a progammable thermostat and a Rudd gas furnance.

ANSWER:

I would start by double checking the wiring to the thermostat at the thermostat end *and* the furnace/ac end. If the mfg. was nice, they will have a wiring diagram somewhere inside the furnace. Also it would be nice to have the instructions/wiring diagram for the thermostat as well. If you don't see any mis-wired connections, check the wire itself to be sure there is not a short in it. Maybe someone drove a nail through it and shorted one or more wires together. If you can't see the wire because it is in the wall, then I would disconnect it at both ends and use an ohm meter to test each wire against each other wire to be sure there is no short. Note that this may have been installed wrong and there could even be not enough wires run for this setup - in which case you will need to run a new wire. If all of that checks out OK, then I would call the furnace guy unless you know how to troubleshoot the furnace itself.
