Flame Detector Error on Trane gas furnace
QUESTION:I have a Trane combination outdoor gas furnace/air conditioner. Recently I
noticed that the inducer fan and indoor fan were running all the time, and
the unit would not heat. I checked the diagnostic indicator on the circuit
board and it was giving the error for 'flame detected with no call for
heat'. I am reasonably certain that the problem does not actually exist,
because I am getting the error even with the main gas valve shut off. The
problem is intermittent and comes and goes on its own. When the problem is
not happening, the furnace operates normally and the air conditioning
operates fine. There is what looks like an electrode placed in the flame path from one of
the burners, identified in the diagram as a "flame detector". (Not to be
confused with the spark electrode that lights off the gas.) Does someone
understand what the function of this electrode is, and how can I
troubleshoot it? I am an electrical engineer with fairly extensive controls experience, so I
understand what the furnace is trying to do. I would like to know if there
is anything I can try before replacing the (expensive) circuit board.
ANSWER: Call a Liscened Gas technician to safely diagnose and repair it. Understanding the basics is not enough, you have to have someone whi is
familiar wiht the operation and safety controls. Start with the guy who installed it, then if ya cant find him, maybe call
Trane for a dealer recomondation.
