QUESTION:

I've been reading about how the Japanese use Furnace Filter. Anyone know the details about using this stuff? Is it the common disposable kind we all use for our furnace/AC intakes. ? or is it the permanent Electrostatic Stuff.? How do you apply it in the filter?, How much do you need? (I got a 1000 gal pond, I plan on 4-5 Koi). Will it need a pre-filter?

ANSWER:

I've found furnace filter material to be very effective as a pre-filter. If it's strong enough and pure enough to filter the air we breathe, it ought to be ok for pond water, and it works. I use the kind you can buy at Home Depot, Walmart or other home products places, and cut it to fit my skimmer box. I use two or three layers of it. The first (outer-most) layer gets pretty crummy, the second less so, and the third stays relatively clean, which means my pump is not getting exposed to too much gunk.
Of course, this is all a moot discussion right now since about six or seven inches of ice cover the area of the pond where the filters and pump are! (... but a nice, bubbling opening is providing a nice oxygen and gas exchange, even in this morning's minus two degrees).
