QUESTION:Does anyone know how a waste oil furnace differs from reg.oil furnace.
Have old house oil furnace in my workshop and have had mixed results
burning used oil thru it. In the past there have been times when it has
worked well. Suspect its primarily a problem with viscosity. Would really
like to know how commercially avail. units work.
ANSWER: Most of the commercial furnaces I have seen or read up on used a pump to
maintain an even flow into the combustion chamber. I use one in a year round
greenhouse on thefarm that was an old pot type oil furnace. I have an inside
barrel that feeds the furnace by gravity. I allow the oil to flow into the oil
control unit from the top. Since the oil is of varing viscosities the only
control I have is to let the extra overflow into a five gallon container. I
know it is kind of a jury rigged but it works and with a little time you can
get it adjusted pretty good. I generally only have an overflow of a couple of
gallons a day. It is keeping a 30 by 50 foot greenhouse at 75 degrees even
with the outside being currently zero with wind chills of 30 below in Michigan.
