how to filter before it hits the UV filter.
QUESTION:I was told to try to keep the water as clean as possible before it enters the
UV filter. Rather than try to filter the water before it hits my submersible
pump (it seems to be a hassle with the Beckett Versa 1250 that I have)
although I do have a nylon laundry bag around it) I had the idea of putting
together some mechanical filter that sits at the top of the down pipe of my
upflow bio filter (Rubbermaid 100G). Then it would also be easier to access
than the pump. I thought of possibly putting some filter material in the down pipe itself
but the inner diameter is kind of small (I used 1 1/2") or is it? I tried
drainage cloth but it clogs to easily. I put scrubber pads... it was too
coarse a filter. I thought of buying a filter bag but am umsure of what
micron size to buy. I tried stuffing reticulated foam (from a Fluval aquarium filter, small and
circular 1 inch thick) cut to size to fit the 2 inch outlet in my bio filter.
It could not handle the water flow and started overflowing and also it too
clogged to easily. Am I trying to filter the water too much? In your opinion, is a nylon laundry
bag around the pump plus the 100g bio filter (uses polyethlene rope and two
layers of blue furnace filter material) enough mechanical filtration? I need help if anybody out there has dealt with this kind of situation
already.
ANSWER: Are you using fiberglass furnace filters? If so, the fibers may
contaminate your
water and harm the fish.
