charcoal bits in wall furnace
QUESTION:I am a new homeowner and noticed I get small chunks of charcoal that
falls to the floor underneath the gas wall furnace. I suspect this is
not a normal situation. What is the likely cause and solution?
ANSWER: I had the same problem. The cause was my chimney was slowly falling apart
and little chunks of its inner clay lining was falling down into the
furnace. First, turn off the gas and clean the inside of the furnace. Then
remove the duct leading to the chimney and see if there's any debris at the
base. If so, remove them and then you may need to repair the clay lining.
This is where it may be best left to professionals. Call a chimney sweeper.
They can repair it by placing a stainless steel duct all the way from the
furnace to the chimney top. That's a hefty price too at over $1000. Call
around.
